A guest blog post on the topic of business and sustainability by 100% natural beauty brand, and friends of DotYork, KiteNest
Business and sustainability coexist. Don’t let anyone else make you think otherwise.
The 60 fastest-growing sustainable market opportunities, together, could generate more than UK£9 trillion and create over 380 million new jobs by 2030.
Recent stats from The Global Footprint Network reveal we’re devouring our planet’s resources in increasingly destructive volumes. To maintain our current appetite for resources, we would need the equivalent of 1.7 Earth’s. We have consumed a year’s worth of carbon, food, water, fibre, land and timber in a record 212 days.
The truth is, we only have one planet, not 1.7, and there are 365 days in a year. We all know what this means. Now is the time to change.
Businesses need to focus on investing as equally in protecting people and the planet, as they do in making their products and profits. Consumers need fairer and easier access to ethical and eco-products.
As a 100% natural beauty brand, our sustainable approach and impact on the environment are the driving force behind our products. By harvesting some of our ingredients by hand, we understand how our soils, pollinators and ecosystems are critical to the longevity of the beauty industry. Working with nature isn’t always easy, but what it gives you is fresh, healthy and magical ingredients that do wonders for us. You should never compromise on skincare. If you’re letting your skin soak up ingredients, then you should be prepared to eat them too. No artificial replacement works as well on your skin, nor for the planet.
For any ingredients we can’t (yet) grow ourselves, we take great pride in carefully selecting our suppliers, ensuring they meet our strong ethos of ingredients harvested cruelty-free, 100% natural and responsibly-sourced. Of course, this sometimes results in higher costs, but it translates into complete confidence in our ingredients and suppliers. This ethos feeds its way across everything we do: even our packaging is sustainably sourced, fully recyclable and printed using eco-friendly inks. It wouldn’t feel right to us if we did it any other way.
As a new business, we’ve invested time and energy in understanding and talking to our customers. Building trust in our products and ethos is paramount to our existence. We’ve responded to what people want, and now almost all of our items are plastic-free, while we’ve made significant changes to our packaging and ingredients to help reduce our carbon footprint. We also love sharing your creative ideas on ways to upcycle our packaging to give them a new lease of life.
The Business and Sustainable Development Commission recently revealed that sustainable business is an untapped £9 million trillion opportunity, making sustainability the most lucrative business sector there is. Becoming a sustainable leader will not only reap the benefits of this new £9 trillion market, but will help your conscious too.
Our sustainable ethos has brought us a healthy, loyal customer base who trust us to do the right thing for their health and beauty, but most importantly, we love knowing that we’re making a difference, and knowing that we’re influencing people to make changes that are good for their lives and the world around them.
Luckily, we’re not doing this alone. There’s a considerable number of businesses out there striving to make a real environmental difference and who’re inspiring customers to consume in a way that benefits the planet.
Conversation is the place to start. By speaking to other brands and businesses about how they are reducing waste and emissions, we’re all sharing ideas that we can embed into our work. Helping the planet isn’t a competition it’s a collaboration. Otherwise, the litter, emissions and habitat destruction that is left, affects us all. There’s no avoiding it.
Every small action adds up to something magnificent. Here at KiteNest, we’re supporting an army of passionate individuals to make the world greater and greener - while feeling beautiful doing it!
